Bio:

Mao is the grand-daughter of Alleraia, the embodiment of the Devoted Spirit in

the temple of nine. Her parents went missing shortly after her birth, leading her to

spend the first eight years of her life being raised by her grandmother. As she

became older she would listen to Alleraia tell tales of her adventures with Zero,

the late Grand Master, while also studying martial arts within the temple. When

Mao reached the age of eight, much to her dismay, Alleraia passed away. Due to

a request made by Alleraia, the temple took Mao in and began training her at an

early age.

Mao began learning the ways of the monk and unarmed combat. This was to

teach her how to defend herself in the absence of a weapon before her training in

the martial schools began. After she was sufficiently skilled in the basics of

unarmed combat, she began training as a swordsage. Mao quickly realized that

she preferred her fists to a weapon and continued training without one. After a

sufficient amount of time she became especially skilled in the use of Desert Wind

techniques. Her unusual preference for unarmed combat within the temple,

combined with her skill in desert wind, earned her the title “Burning Fist” as she

sparred with various opponents.

As she became more advanced in the ways of the swordsage the temple

requested her services to protect a direct descendant of Zero. An unknown

group was targeting the family and the temple was unable to convince Sophia to

stay within safe reach. Mao agreed, knowing the friendly history between their

families and seeing it as an opportunity to further hone her abilities in combat.

Sophia and Mao traveled together for around a year after her agreement,

travelling to various cities in Sophia’s research. Mao often became the subject of

experiments conducted by Sophia, willing or otherwise. She had heard the

stories of Sophia’s master during their travels and how he had gone missing

during one of his own experiments.

Towards the end of this first year traveling together, the temple’s caution paid off.

Sophia and Mao were ambushed by a number of people who were rather open

about the fact that they were seeking vengeance upon the descendants of Zero.

So the fight began, and the two were aided by a mysterious shapeshifter who

happened to be passing through the forest at the time.

Their assailants were easily defeated, effortlessly put down by the group of three.

Mao, having been a bit careless, accidentally started a brush fire which soon set

the small portion of forest ablaze. Sophia, having traveled with Mao for some

time, had taught herself a spell to create water. She did her best to contain the

blaze, but a gust of wind set it outside of her ability to control. This annoyed the

shapechanger, though he continued to accompany them to their next destination.
